ABOUT MASWO

Malayali Association of Social Workers in Ontario, popularly known as MASWO is an association of professional Social Workers of Malayali descent, which falls within the larger South Asian diaspora in Canada. The word “Malayali” means the individuals who identify themselves with the fabulous culture of Kerala, a province in India. The word “Malayali” is also associated with the word Malayalam, which is the mother lounge of the people of Kerala.

Malayali immigration to Canada begun notably in 1950’s. Though the exact number of Malayali population in Canada is unknown at this time, it has grown significantly over the decades, especially since 2000. Malayali immigration to Canada has grown significantly over the past few decades, driven by opportunities for better education, employment, and quality of life. Malayalis, who originate from Kerala in India, have found Canada attractive due to its inclusive immigration policies, robust economy, and multicultural society. Many Malayalis have settled in major urban centers such as Toronto, Vancouver, and Calgary, working in diverse fields such as healthcare, IT, engineering, and business. The vibrant Malayali community in Canada maintains strong cultural ties through organizations, festivals, and events, preserving their heritage while integrating into Canadian society.
